Homecoming of Persephone
digital collage
June 2013
Persephone is known as the goddess of the underworld.  She was stolen by Hades from her mother Demeter, and proclaimed his wife.  Demeter searched the earth for Persephone, accompanied by Hecate, who bore a torch guiding the way.  When Demeter learned that Zeus had conspired her daughter’s abduction, she refused to let the earth fruit until her daughter was returned.  Zeus consented, however once a year Persephone had to visit her husband in the underworld.  Here, Persephone drifts patiently while balancing embers upon her head, pensive yet carrying a token either to or from the underworld.

Portals of Nyx

June 2013

Nyx was the Greek goddess of night, born by Air and Darkness and created Light and Day.  She is scarce in Greek mythology, as she is only ever seen in glimpses, found in the shadows of the world.  Here, Nyx is posed in a temple of portals in the highlands of a vast unknown territory.

Vision of Asteria

Asteria is the ancient Greek goddess of the stars.  As a Titan, she is associated with falling stars, prophecies of the night, prophetic dreams, the reading of stars and necromancy.  Asteria is also the mother of the goddess Hecate, goddess of the trinity.   Here, Asteria is presented with a blazing face, a gateway to a cool vessel of infinity. She stands still, in a moment of reception to a question or a moment, a vision, a self annunciation- a presentation of metaphysical identity.

Trinity of Hecate

Hecate was a Greek goddess, who ruled over heaven, the earth and sea.  Usually represented either as a woman with three heads or three women.  Hecate was associated with crossroads and entranceways, magic, sorcery and, like her mother Asteria, necromancy.  She is also known as “the far reaching one” or, “she that operates from afar”, sometimes bearing a torch.  Here, Hecate operates as a trinity, with her torch missing, as an active statue accumulating time.
